Hi,
Hi, I've been trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) for many years now. What frustrated me when I first started was the lack of free historical data for the NYSE stock exchange. As i was using technical Analysis, I wanted to back test my buy and sell signals before I went and did some real trades.
Now, years later, after I've scoured the net for historical data, the web has not changed that much. Historical data for the NYSE is still scarce. So I've gone and set up a website where others starting out trading shares on the NYSE stock exchange can download historical data free of charge: NYSE Historical Data. No strings attached. I've obtained this data throughout the may years I've been trading. I hope it helps others in their search for data, and experience.
The data on NYSE Historical Data is updated monthly, on the first of the month. The files are downloadable month by month in metastock format:
Symbol, Date, Open, High, Low, Close, Volume
The data is available in both raw data, and adjusted for dividends and splits.
The data goes back to 1962. That's over thirty years of data! Surely that's enough for most technical traders to back test their methods.
I've also uploaded NASDAQ historical data in addition to NYSE data.
Thats all for me for now. Hopefully my website NYSE historical Data will benefit other NYSE stock traders.
Where to download Free EOD Data
When you've decided to start trading shares, you have to decide one of two things: To use technical analysis, or fundamental analysis. If you decide to go down the technical analysis path, you'll need historical data on the stock exchange you need. This is critical in back testing any methods you may develop. You need to prove to yourself with real data that your methods work before you want to risk your hard earned money on the real stock exchange. Unfortunately, most sites only offer end of day data at a price.
Lucky for you, a new site has been set up to accomodate those looking for free end of day data. Free! I admit its not the flashiest of sites, but it works. Its simple, and its free. The data is available for download in metastock format, in csv (comma separated values) files.
You can download historical data for the following stock exchanges:

ASX EOD Data for Technical Analysis
Technical Analysis is defined as 'The method of predicting future stock price movements based on observation of historical stock price movements'.
There are many definitions associated with the technical analysis of stock prices. The most important ones are:
- Resistance - an area that brings on increased selling
- Support - an area that brings on increased buying
- Breakout - when a price passes through and stays above an area of support or resistance
- Trend line - a sloping line of support or resistance
- Moving average - lags behind the price action
- Bollinger bands - a range of price volatility
- Pivot point - derived by calculating the numerical average of a particular currency's or stock's high, low and closing prices
Knowing when to Buy and Sell stocks is the key to a successful share trader using technical analysis. Many methods may be used: Moving averages, Candle stick patterns and Fibonacci.
To test out your technical analysis formulas/equations usually two things are required:
- charting software
- historical stock data
For charting software, I recommend AmiBroker. I personally use it, and came accross it from other people's recommendation as the cheapest and value for money application.
End Of Day historical data for the Australian Stock Exchange is available freely on ASX historical data
